Uh Oh. I Just Bought a Crash Pad.
I’m not much of a boulderer and never have been. Sure, I’ll go bouldering with my climbing partners if I can’t convince them to do some routes, but I just don’t enjoy bouldering very much. I like being high up.
Up until about 6 months ago, I had an old Misty Mountain Highlander crash pad that I’d bought back in 2000. I’d used it to boulder in Yosemite, Joshua Tree, and Stoney Point in California, plus Joe’s Valley, Ibex, Triassic, Little Cottonwood, and Moab in Utah. But last year I went through a decluttering phase and my seldom-used crash pad was caught up in the purge. I sold it for $50. Most of my climbing buddies have crash pads so what do I need one for, right?
Fast forward to yesterday. The weather has been nice here in Salt Lake for a couple weeks now and I’m finally getting out to climb a few times a week, but even that isn’t enough. I want to get out more. But finding motivated partners is always difficult, and I started to think about bouldering again. And then I realized that I had a big fat REI dividend and a 20% off coupon waiting for me. And then… I bought a new Metolius crash pad.
So yeah. I’m going to start bouldering again. Later this week I’ll probably hit up Bells Canyon. Next week I’ll visit a new Utah bouldering area called The Notch. The week after that I’m heading down to Moab to climb some towers and who knows, maybe I’ll spend an extra day down there wrestling some pebbles…
Today Only: $5 for $10 Amazon Gift Card on AmazonLocal
So when I’m not rock climbing I blog about Amazon and free Kindle books (among other things). Amazon has a Groupon-esque daily deals site called AmazonLocal. Not many people are aware of its existence, so AmazonLocal is selling $10 Amazon gift cards for $5 to drive people to the site.
Just go to http://local.amazon.com and choose the city nearest you. You’ll then be taken to the deal page.
I mention this here so that my climbing compatriots can save on climbing gear, guidebooks, my 101 Rock Climbing Tips and Tricks ebook, Clif Bars, or whatever else you want to order.
My Book Is Here!
I’m super psyched to announce that my newest ebook is here! It’s called 101 Rock Climbing Tips and Tricks, and it’s $2.99 on Amazon.
It’s a Kindle ebook, but you don’t need a Kindle to read it. Once you buy it, you can read it in your browser, on your Mac or Windows PC, or on a bunch of other devices (including iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone, and Android phone/tablet).
I’ve been climbing for 16 years and have done over 200 first ascents, including the second longest sport route in the US. I’ve climbed thousands of pitches, and this book is the distillation of that climbing knowledge and experience. And it’s only $2.99!
And it would be great if you’d share the book on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and wherever else you hang out online :)
Free eBook: The Night Climbers of Cambridge
This is a buildering guidebook (with really interesting text and photos) from 70 years ago! It’s all about buildering at one of the world’s top universities, Cambridge. Pretty awesome.
This ebook is free today (and maybe only for today). It can be read on a variety of devices or in your browser.
Download it here.

I’m making a list of Tumblr climbing blogs
And I want to include yours on the list. Let me know what your climbing-related Tumblr blog is and I’ll add it. I’ll then post the list and add a link to the list in the sidebar here at climbs.me.
If at least half of the posts on your blog are climbing-related, I’ll include it.
I just started TradClimbingVideos.com
Yesterday I bought the domain name tradclimbingvideos.com and set up a new Tumblr blog there. It’s exactly what its names says: videos of trad climbs.
Trad climbing is where my heart lies, and while the plethora of bouldering videos out there are fun to watch, they don’t really do it for me. So I created tradclimbingvideos.com as a place where like-minded traddies and perspective traddies can get psyched.
The plan is to add a new video every day, so head on over there and follow or subscribe. Thanks!
