Some of My Trip Reports
I’ve been climbing a lot of long, moderate routes lately (my favorite kind of climbing) and here are the trip reports I’ve written up. All of the routes are here in Utah.
A Solo Ascent of Geurt’s Ridge (5.5, 1,500′) on Mt. Olympus
Climbing (and Rappelling) Wilson’s Arch Near Moab, Utah
The 2nd (?) Ascent of Grumpies, Harkonnen Castle, Arches National Park
My Second Time Up Ancient...

Six essential yoga poses for climbers →
I’m not much of a yoga guy but I did go to a class last night and I’m nice and sore this morning. I know a lot of people swear by yoga for helping their climbing, so check out this article, try it out, go to a class, and see if it works for you.

I Returned My Crash Pad So I Could Do More Rope...
I mentioned three weeks ago that I bought a crash pad after not having bouldered for several years. I bought it mainly because it’s hard for me to find partners that want to climb as often as I climb and that also have the time flexibility that I have.
Well, I never went bouldering. In the last few weeks I’ve been climbing in Moab and several areas around Salt Lake, but I...

How to Build Your Own Cam →
This is an interesting forum thread on Mountain Project. A kid is making a cam in his shop class. I don’t think he plans on using it or anything, but it’s a fun project to keep track of, and the guy who’s building the cam updates the thread regularly.

A Short Talk With a Legend of Rock (Yvon... →
Great short article from Smithsonian Magazine about Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia and Black Diamond and first ascentionist of many classic rock climbs in Yosemite and elsewhere.
Some interesting passages:
In the 1950s, Chouinard says, there were fewer than 300 climbers in America
and Yosemite National Park estimates that in the park,
climbers log between 25,000 and 50,000...

The Latest SuperTopo Newsletter →
Climbing guidebook publisher SuperTopo sends out a monthly newsletter and the latest one just came out. It links to the site’s best trip reports, forum posts, and gear reviews from the past month. Definitely worth a look.
zenthlete asked: I bought your ebook on amazon and I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed it. As someone just getting my start in climbing with a relatively solid grasp on climbing technique, but not really a clue on what goes into a real trad climb or climbing culture (being from florida) the book was a true resource. I also really appreciated the section on building a gear rack. Possibly one of the...

Uh Oh. I Just Bought a Crash Pad.
I’m not much of a boulderer and never have been. Sure, I’ll go bouldering with my climbing partners if I can’t convince them to do some routes, but I just don’t enjoy bouldering very much. I like being high up.
Up until about 6 months ago, I had an old Misty Mountain Highlander crash pad that I’d bought back in 2000. I’d used it to boulder in Yosemite, Joshua...
